COMETS AT HOME TONIGHT AGAINST DALLAS

by Pete Richmire

INDEPENDENCE, MO. - The Kansas City Comets (10-4-1) return to Cable Dahmer Arena this Friday to open a home-and-home series with their Central Division foe Dallas Sidekicks (8-7-1). Kansas City is 3-0 against Dallas this season, and 10-1 all-time during the regular-season. The Comets will be looking to rebound from their California road trip that ended in two losses while the team was missing several key players on both offense and defense. They can also stretch their Central Division lead over the second place Sidekicks, who currently trail Kansas City by eight points as the MASL schedule heads towards the playoff stretch. Both the Comets and Sidekicks each have eight games to go, so this weekend will be big in the standings if either team can sweep the series.

John Sosa took over the scoring lead for the Comets with 32 points (11G-21A) with Leo Gibson (19G-12A) one of the key players unavailable as he was attending to the birth of his child. Lucas Sousa (15G-5A) and Rian Marques (14G-6A) are tied for third on the squad in scoring with 20 points each. Sosa will not be available in Friday’s matchup due to a one-game suspension due to penalty point accumulation.

Defensively, the Comets have six players with 10+ blocks this season, led by Sosa’s 21. With Nicolau Neto ( 8-1, 4.57, .737) out for a stretch of games due to injury, Lou Misner has six starts this season and is 2-3-1 with a 6.25 GAA, and .654 sv%. For Dallas, Juan Gamboa is 8-4-1 in net with a 5.80 GAA, and .703 sv%. His 185 saves leads the MASL.

Four players are having 10+ point seasons for the Sidekicks with Jamie Lovegrove’s (15G-13A) 28 points leading the way. Luiz Morales (18G-7A), Julio Varela (7G-6A), and Bradlee Baladez (9G-1A) round out the top scorers.

After Friday’s game, the series will shift to Texas on Sunday with a 3:00 pm kick-off.
