COMETS BATTLE SAN DIEGO SOCKERS FRIDAY NIGHT

by Pete Richmire

INDEPENDENCE, MO. - For the second week in a row, the Kansas City Comets (1-4) will welcome a team to Cable Dahmer Arena making their 2021 season debut. The San Diego Sockers (0-0), like the Tacoma Stars who came last week, will begin a season which for now will take place entirely on the road for them. They will be without the services of Taylor Walter Bond who is serving a one-game suspension due to point accumulation from last season.

Of the ten players with double-digit point production last season, nine return for the Sockers, including the top three in Kraig Chiles (22G-11A), Slavisa Ubiparipovic (14G-10A), and Leonardo De Oliveira (14G-9A). This is the first of two games this weekend for San Diego with a matchup Sunday in Dallas.

Kansas City enters the match looking to snap a four-game skid and keep injuries to a minimum. Three of their top 10 scorers have missed at least one game due to injuries this season. The team lead in scoring is tied at 8 points between Lucas Sousa (4G-4A) and Leo Gibson (3G-5). Kevin Ellis (3G-2A) and Adam James are next on the offensive production list with 5 points each.

Nicolau Neto has handled goal keeping duties in every game so far for KC and has a 1-4 record, with two of the losses coming in overtime. His GAA sits at 6.37 with a .694 save percentage. For the visitors, long time MASL star Boris Pardo returns in goal for SD. He was 11-5 last season with a 4.90 GAA and save percentage of .693.

Prior to the match, the Comets will welcome indoor soccer legend Wes Wade for the Ceremonial First Kick. Wade first played the indoor game with the San Diego Sockers from 1989-92. He cemented his legacy in the Heart of America first with the Kansas City Attack from 1993-2001 and then the Comets from 2001-04. All told, Wade appeared in 504 games with Kansas City and notched 319 goals. Get your tickets now to come salute a legend and catch the Comets battle against the Sockers.
