COMETS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON, FALL 9-5 TO WAVE

Team prepares for playoff season that kicks off Thursday in Kansas City

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (Apr. 14, 2019) – While a win is always the end goal of every game, the Kansas City Comets had two main objectives for their final regular season match against the Milwaukee Wave…stay injury free and to give some valuable playing experience to some of their younger players. While they didn’t accomplish the win, falling 9-5, they did accomplish their other two goals.

Defender James Togbah missed this game due to penalty point accumulations while Kevin Ellis, Lucas Rodriguez, Stefan Stokic and Leo Gibson also stayed home in Kansas City to rest.

With those players not in the lineup, it gave a chance for Mirko Sandivari, Robert Kelly, and goalkeeper Steven Hamersky got the chance to earn some valuable playing time.

Hamersky entered the game in the second quarter and made several great saves, including a stop late in the game on a Milwaukee shootout attempt.

The Comets took some time to gel with so many changes in their game day roster. They fell behind 5-0 and only mustered four shots in the first half of play. John Sosa finally got Kansas City on the board midway through the third quarter with a restart goal from the top of the arc.

In the fourth quarter, the Comets finally started to find a rhythm. Kansas City outscored Milwaukee in the final period 4-3, with goals from Ramone Palmer, Bryan Perez, Nacho Flores and Anthony Grant. Comets forward Byron Alvarez also recorded an assist in his first extended action of the season.

In the end it wasn’t enough though as the Wave was able to outpace the Comets scoring.

Both teams will now begin preparations in earnest for the opening of the 2019 Ron Newman Cup Playoffs. They will face each other in the postseason for the eighth time in nine years as their home and home series begins on Thursday, April 18 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Tickets are still available for the Comets home leg of the series Thursday night, with kickoff at 7:35 p.m. CT. For tickets and more information, visit KCComets.com/playoffs
