by Pete Richmire

The Kansas City Comets take their 2-0 record to the Lone Star State Saturday night to battle the 0-1 Dallas Sidekicks at the Allen Event Center. This will be the first of six meetings between the teams this season.

In all-time MASL meeting, the Comets hold a 7-1 advantage in the series and swept the Sidekicks in four games last season, outscoring Dallas 44-19 during the 2021 campaign. Kansas City’s lone loss to Dallas came in Texas on December 22, 2019 in a 5-2 decision. Leo Gibson leads the Comets in all-time scoring against the Sidekicks with eight goals and Rian Marques is a close second with seven goals.

The Comets quick start to the season, with two wins over Central Division rival St. Louis Ambush is thanks in part to great offensive production and solid defense. Gibson leads the team in scoring in the early going with seven points (5G-2A), with John Sosa (3G-2A), and Ray Lee (2G-2A). Kevin Ellis, who had four goals against Dallas last season, including a hat-trick, has three goals this season.

Nicolau Neto has been solid in goal after two outings. He brings a 5.00 goals-against-average and .775 save percentage, along with a 2-0 record to Dallas. For the Sidekicks, goalkeeping duties were split in their first game of the season, a loss to St. Louis, between Juan Gamboa and Estevan Vazquez.

Offensively, Dallas is led by Luiz Morales, who netted a hat-trick in the losing effort last weekend. Brenden Lee was the other goal scorer for the Sidekicks against the Ambush.

Following Saturday’s game, the Comets will return to Cable Dahmer Arena on Sunday December 19 to face the Baltimore Blast at 4:00 pm.
