COMETS HOST DALLAS SATURDAY IN PLAYOFF QUARTERFINALS

by Pete Richmire

The Central Division Champion Comets (1-0-0) will make their 2022 Ron Newman Cup Quarterfinal home appearance this Tuesday, April 12 at Cable Dahmer Arena against Central Division foe Dallas Sidekicks (0-1-0) with kick-off set for 7 pm. The teams completed Game One of the series last Saturday with the Comets picking up a 7-3 win in Texas.

With a Game Two win, Kansas City will advance to the Semifinals and face the Florida Tropics, who already advanced. If Dallas wins Game Two, the teams will play a 15-minute Extra Time period to decide the series winner. That period would be treated as a new game and kick-off 30 minutes after Game Two ends.

Trying to avoid that Extra Time period is a Comets team that is 1-0 all-time in the playoffs against Dallas, and 11-3 in the regular season. Kansas City was 4-2 against the Sidekicks during the regular season this year, including 2-1 at home. The lone loss came once the Divisional Championship was already claimed and the Comets were resting players and giving rookies extra playing time.

In Game One, Kansas City benefited from two-goal performances from Nacho Flores and Lesia Thetsane and both are tied with John Sosa for the team playoff scoring lead with two points. Sosa had a goal and an assist in the win on Saturday. Benji Monreal and James Togbah chipped in goals in the winning effort.

In goal, Nicolau Neto stopped 11 of 14 Dallas shots on his way to the win. His opponent, Juan Gamboa, made 16 saves for the Sidekicks in the loss.

On offense, only Jamie Lovegrove had a multi-point game for Dallas on Saturday, registering a goal and a save. Lovegrove has been a key to the Sidekicks’ success since joining the team early in the season from San Diego. Julio Varela and Sebastian Mendez accounted for the other Dallas goals, and Bradlee Baladez recorded an assist in the game.
