COMETS KICK OFF HOME SCHEDULE FRIDAY AGAINST TACOMA

by Pete Richmire

INDEPENDENCE, MO. – The Kansas City Comets (1-3) will kick off their home schedule this Friday night against the Tacoma Stars (0-0), who will be making their 2021 debut. The Comets have hosted the Stars three times previously and are undefeated versus Tacoma in front of the home fans. All-time, since Tacoma rejoined the MASL, Kansas City holds a 4-1 series lead. Game time is set for 7:05 pm CST. Tickets are available at https://www.ticketmaster.com/kansas-city-comets-tickets/artist/835909

As the Comets look to rebound from a three-game skid, they will once again have the services of head coach-player Leo Gibson, who has missed the last six quarters of play due to a first-half red card received in Florida last Sunday. His return is timely as the Comets are nursing injuries to several players.

Kansas City is led offensively by Lucas Sousa and his 8 points (4G-4A). Gibson is second on the squad with 6 points (3G-3A). Rian Marques (4G-0A), Adam James (3G-0A), Ramone Palmer (2G-1A), Mirko Sandivari (1G-2A), and John Sosa (0G-3A) round out the leading KC scorers.

Nicolau Neto has started all four Comets games in goal and is 1-3 with a 6.65 GAA and .671 save percentage. During the off-season, the Stars beefed up their goalkeeping corps by signing 2019-20 MASL Goalkeeper of the Year Chris Toth to accompany Danny Waltman. Together they made up the MASL Western Conference goalkeeper team.

In addition, head coach-player Nick Perera made improvements on offense and defense. New to the Stars roster are midfielders De Bray Hollimon and Adrian Gutierrez, forward Vini Dantas, defender Adriano Dos Santos, and returning to Tacoma is defender Pablo Da Silva after a season in St. Louis.

Also returning are Mike Ramos who finished second in team scoring, one point behind Perera with 41 points (28G-13A) with his 28 goals tops on the roster. Alex Caceres (10G-13A) and Alessandro Canale (5G-9A) finished third and fourth in scoring and are back with the Stars. Midfielder Phillip Lund, who missed all last season with an injury.

Friday’s match will begin a run of five-straight home games over the next month with the San Diego Sockers, St. Louis Ambush, and a pair of games with the Dallas Sidekicks are on the schedule.
