Comets midfielder Benji Monreal signs 3-year extension

by Pete Richmire

The Comets have signed midfielder Eduardo 'Benji' Monreal, who is entering his third year with the squad, to a three-year contract that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2025-26 season. Per league and team policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Monreal has tallied four goals and three assists in two regular season campaigns as a Comet. He also has two playoff goals, including his memorable flying back heel against the Dallas Sidekicks in the 2022 Ron Newman Cup Quarterfinals.

“I am very excited to be able to return to the field with all my teammates and continue proudly wearing the colors of this great institution,” Monreal said. “This opportunity means a lot to be able to develop myself better as a person, to grow individually and as a group.”

He immediately made his name known in the 2021-22 season with the Comets after he scored the game-winning goal against the Milwaukee Wave on his MASL debut to break what was a 6-6 tie. Now, he hopes to help the team win the Eastern Conference and giving back to the fans by winning the Ron Newman Cup.

A native of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Monreal originally signed with the Comets in 2021 after becoming a standout M2 player with the Chihuahua Savage and Wichita Wings. He tallied 35 points from 21 goals and 14 assists in 19 games while playing for M2 teams.

Monreal shined brightly in the 2021 season with the Wings. He was named to the M2 First Team and was a finalist for M2 MVP as he helped the Wings to the M2 Finals.

"This extension with Benji will benefit the Comets Family all the way through," said Comet coach Stefan Stokic. "We are excited to have him long-term as an important member of the squad."

The Comets open the season at home against the Milwaukee Wave on November 26. Visit kccomets.com/tickets for more information about season tickets.
