COMETS RE-SIGN DEFENDER AKINS BANTON

INDEPENDENCE, MO. – The Comets added a formidable figure to their back line as the team announced the re-signing of 6’4” defender Akins Banton. The contract is pending immigration and visa approval and per team and league policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Jamaica native, nicknamed “The Big Guy,” joined the Comets last season and was added to the active roster during week seven, eventually appearing in six games for the club.

Before joining the Comets, Banton played collegiate soccer at Columbia College, taking the pitch alongside current Kansas City teammate Nicolau Neto. During his senior season with the Cougars Banton scored a pair of goals and received an AMC Player of the Week award.

The Comets have continued to strengthen their defense this off-season and head coach Stefan Stokic likes the addition of Banton.

“We are happy to have Akins. Akins is a player with a lot of potential. He is strong, quick, and technical for his size. We added another strong defender to the back line,” Stokic said.

For his part, Banton’s taste of action last season has him ready to go.

He said, “It is an honor to be able to represent the Comets. Last season was a learning experience for me, and I am more than elated that the coaching staff can see me in the team's future. I want to take this time to say a special thank you to all who have helped to make this possible. I am excited to help the team bring home the cup to the best fans in the league!”
