Comets sign College Draft pick Jakib Jones

by Nathan Dunn

The Kansas City Comets have signed 3rd round College Draft pick Jakib Jones to a two-year contract. Per team and league policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Jones was picked with the 37th overall pick of the inaugural MASL College Draft in December and earned his first professional contract in the MASL.

“I’m happy to be a part of a program like this,” Jones said. “I’ve been following them for years so I’m glad to be out here with the guys.”

The Park Hill High School graduate played five seasons at Park University under head coach and former Kansas City Attack player Efrem Shimlis. The 5’10” forward recorded 34 goals and eight assists in 65 games for the Pirates, earning All-Conference honors in 2019 and 2022.

Jones joins a long list of players who have played for the Comets and Park University including current Comets players Ramone Palmer, Nacho Flores, Lucas Sousa and Jacob Garza.

“I played with a couple of them at Park. I’m just glad to be another alumnus of Park University on the Comets team,” Jones said.

Jones is hoping to adapt his success in the outdoor game to indoors and contribute to the Comets attacking efforts for the next two years.

“Jakib is a pacy player who is a high volume shooter,” said Comets managing partner Brian Budzinski. “Once he begins to understand the indoor game more he will contribute to our offensive production.”

The Comets return to Cable Dahmer Arena to face the Florida Tropics on Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.kccomets.com/tickets.
