The Comets have re-signed veteran defender John Sosa to a one-year contract. Per league and team policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Sosa is entering his 12th season with the franchise after tallying the best two-year spell offensively of his impressive career. He recorded 71 points from 28 goals and 43 assists across the past two seasons.

Sosa was also the team's assist leader the past two seasons and earned December's MASL Offensive Player of the Month last year despite his defensive classification.

Comets coach Stefan Stokic is happy to have Sosa back as an integral part of the team, especially as the greatest restart threat in the league.

"This is a big signing for the KC Comets," Stokic said. "Adding another veteran player in the back line and a standout member of the Kansas City community is huge for us. The talent and vision that John Sosa brings is going to be a big part of our style of play."

A native of Medellin, Colombia, the UMKC graduate originally signed with the Comets in 2011. He enjoyed six years as a Comet, winning the 2014 MISL Championship before joining the San Diego Sockers in 2017.

After spending one season with the Sockers, Sosa returned to Kansas City in 2018 and has served as a tremendous veteran presence within the team. He is joined by Leo Gibson as the only players in franchise history to record over 200 assists and 200 regular season games.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to play another year of the game I love with the support of our great fans and my beautiful family," Sosa said.

Sosa has also played with the United States Futsal National Team and is in his fifth season serving as the head men's soccer coach at Benedictine College.

The anticipation is growing for the 2023-24 season, which starts on Sunday, Nov. 26 at Cable Dahmer Arena as the Comets host the Milwaukee Wave.
