Comets sign Sporting KC product Mikey Lenis

The Kansas City Comets have signed former U.S. Youth international and Sporting Kansas City Academy defender Mikey Lenis to a three-year contract. Per league and team policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The 20-year-old brings another versatile youthful presence to the Comets as he transitions to indoor soccer after playing at a high level in the outdoor game.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mikey to the Comets family,” said Comets head coach Stefan Stokic. “His signing marks an exciting chapter for our team as we add a young talent whose technical prowess and exceptional soccer IQ set him apart.”

A native of Weston, Florida, Lenis moved to Kansas City in 2017 to join the Sporting KC Academy after earning a call-up to the United States under-14 camp at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center in Carson, California. He went on to represent Sporting’s under-17 and under-19 teams before making 28 appearances with Sporting KC II.

Stokic added, “Mikey brings a unique strength to the field, demonstrating not only skill but also a deep understanding of the game. The Comets are not just a team; we are a family, and we are proud to have Mikey as a vital part of our journey toward excellence.”

Lenis was also called into camp in June 2018 for the U.S. under-16 team that trained at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He trained alongside Philadelphia Union standouts Paxten Aaronson and Jack McGlynn.

In 2021, he signed a USL Championship Academy contract with Sporting KC II and appeared in seven games. The team moved to MLS NEXT Pro in 2022, and Lenis returned on an amateur contract before signing a professional contract in a campaign where he tallied a goal and an assist across 15 appearances. Lenis appeared in six games in the 2023 season.

“I’m really happy to be with the Comets,” Lenis said. “All of my teammates, coaches, and the fans have been very welcoming. I can’t wait to go out there and play for this club.”

Lenis could get his first opportunity this Sunday when the Comets open the season against the Milwaukee Wave at Cable Dahmer Arena. Tickets are still available at kccomets.com/tickets.
