COMETS WRAP UP ROAD TRIP WITH 6-5 OT LOSS TO AMBUSH

by Pete Richmire

ST. CHARLES, MO. – The Comets (7-6-2) wrapped up their extended six-game road trip with a visit to The Family Arena and let a three-goal lead slip as they fell to the St. Louis Ambush (4-8-3) by a 6-5 final in overtime on Sunday. For the Comets, it was their seventh loss in a row, including two in overtime.

The bright spot in the game for Kansas City came in the third quarter when Leo Gibson converted on a John Sosa assist to put the Comets up 5-3 at the time. The goal pushed Gibson into the top spot in Kansas City indoor soccer history for goals scored with 334, passing Kevin Koetters’ mark which stood for 22 years.

The Comets built that lead on goals by Zach Reget, John Sosa, Nach Flores, and Leo Acosta before Gibson’s tally, and with 3:27 left in the third quarter, it looked like the Comets would snap their current skid.

William Eskay scored back-to-back goals for the Ambush to close the third quarter and open the fourth and bring the Ambush within one at 5-4 with 13:17 to go in regulation.

Kansas City successfully killed off a blue card to Flores before VcMor Eligwe scored an even-strength goal for St. Louis to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:23 to play.

Flores drew another penalty with 28 seconds on the clock, but Nicolau Neto stopped the first power play shot and time expired with the game still level.

The Ambush had the benefit of 1:32 of power play time to begin the overtime period but needed less as James Thomas scored the game-winner for St. Louis just 56 seconds in.

The Comets finally return home on Friday to face the Tacoma Stars at 7:05 pm, and Saturday against the Empire Strykers at 6:05 pm! Get your tickets for this double-header weekend today at www.kccomets.com before they sell out.
