Coronado re-signs with hometown Comets for 2026-27 season
The Kansas City Comets have signed goalkeeper Julio Coronado to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season. As per team and league policies, the terms of the deal with the Kansas City native were not disclosed.
Entering his third season with the Comets, Coronado has accumulated 34 saves in just under 200 minutes of game time. He started three games last season before sustaining a season-ending injury, but has recovered and is eager to continue representing his city with great pride.
“Excited to be back for my third year with my hometown club,” Coronado said. “There’s something special about being able to represent the city I call home. Grateful for the opportunity to keep doing what I love and can’t wait to get back to work.”
Coronado earned his first win at the MASL level on December 14, 2025, when the Comets defeated Utica City FC 11-5 on the road. He set a career high with 13 saves in the victory and recorded his first career assist with a left-footed feed to Zach Reget in the third quarter.
A week later, Coronado started in a 3-2 shootout win over the St. Louis Ambush. He then suffered his first loss to the Milwaukee Wave in February.
“Having Julio back is important for us,” Comets head coach Stefan Stokic said. “Last season was tough for him with the injury cutting his season short, but we know the kind of player he is and what he can bring to this team.”
The 23-year-old signed his first MASL contract with the Comets in the 2024-25 season. He made nine saves in his debut start against the Baltimore Blast.
Coronado is a native of Kansas City, Kansas, where he was named 2019 All-District Goalkeeper of the Year at Sumner Academy. He later played collegiately at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, before signing with the Comets.
The 6-foot-3 goalkeeper has the qualities to become a key part of the Comets’ goalkeeping corps. With the guidance of Stokic and his goalkeeping coaches, Alan and Kenny Mayer, Coronado has the necessary resources to continue elevating his game.
“I believe in Julio, and I know he has a lot to give,” Stokic said. “I’m looking forward to seeing him back on the field, competing and helping this team. I’m excited to see what he can do this season.”
Coronado and the Comets open the season over Thanksgiving weekend, visiting St. Louis on Black Friday before hosting Milwaukee on Saturday, Nov. 28. Fans can secure access to all 12 home games by becoming Season Ticket Holders.
