GIBSON NAMED MASL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

by Pat Clifton

KANSAS CITY (Jan. 30, 2020) – Kansas City Comets head coach Leo Gibson is the Major Arena Soccer League SporTurf Player of the Week for his six-goal performance in the Comets’ 12-4 win over the Rochester Lancers Sunday.

The Player of the Week is voted on each week by MASL fans and MASL teams. Gibson becomes the second Comet to win the weekly award this season, Kevin Ellis receiving the accolade for a five-goal game in Week 8.

Gibson, a former MVP, is leading the MASL in points. His 22 goals and 16 assists are good for 38 points, eight better than the five challengers tied for second. Gibson trails Ontario’s Franck Tayou (25) and Milwaukee’s Ian Bennett (23) for the league lead in goals, tying Monterrey’s Brayan Aguilar (22) for third. He trails only Milwaukee’s Max Ferdinand (17) for the league lead in assists.

Sunday, Gibson secured a hat-trick in the opening quarter en route to a half dozen, two shy of the franchise-record eight set by Gibson Feb. 22, 2015 against the Tacoma Stars.

Gibson and the Comets are in the thick of a playoff race, and they’re back in action Thursday, Feb. 6 against the Harrisburg Heat, 7:05 p.m. at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
