by Jeff Husted

KANSAS CITY (March 1, 2018) – The Kansas City Comets will finish the 2017-2018 season with a pair of games over the weekend. The Comets will travel to the Pacific Northwest on Friday night at 9:35 p.m. CT for a match against the Tacoma Stars before playing the season finale at home against the Florida Tropics on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. CT. It will be the second time this year the Comets have faced each of these teams.

GAME NOTES –
March 2 – Comets vs Stars
March 4 – Comets vs Tropics

This season, the Comets have had to look harder for positives than they have in previous years, but the team is excited about the future.

Young players like Adam James and Anthony Grant have excited the crowds, while second year players Nacho Flores, Carlos Trombini and Guerrero Pino have shown tremendous growth in their positions and in their play.

The Comets hope to finish the season on a high note, and will look to Comets all-time leading scorer Leo Gibson to lead the way as he continues to add to his legendary status.

There are many familiar faces waiting for the Comets on the other side of the ball in Tacoma. Five former Comets players now call Tacoma home. Alex Megson and Danny Waltman have been with the Stars for several years while Alain Matingou, Robert Palmer and Ramone Palmer are in their first year with the club.

The Stars are led offensively by Nick Perera and Philip Lund who have 19 and 16 goals respectively. Perera came to the Stars midway through the season in a trade from the Syracuse Silver Knights. Taylor Bond, acquired in a separate trade with the Cedar Rapids Rampage, has scored seven goals in the eight games since he made the move.

New goalkeeper Mark Saxby will work to coordinate his defense against Florida’s high-powered offense. Behind Ricardo Diegues and Freddy Moojen, the Tropics average 6.1 goals per game. Halftime of the Tropics match will also feature the return of the fan-favorite Mascot Game featuring the Comets mascot, Calvin, and many other mascots playing a full-costumed exhibition of soccer.

Friday’s match will kick off at 9:35 p.m. CT and aired live on MASLtv. Fans are encouraged to join the Comets Nation fan group at Coach’s Bar & Grille in Overland Park for a Watch Party.

Sunday’s season finale kicks off at 5:05 p.m. CT. The Annual Mascot Game will be played at halftime of the match. Calvin, the Comets mascot, will host the annual fan-favorite exhibition between some of the greatest mascots from the area. Fans are encouraged to bring lightly-used sports equipment to donate to Lily’s League – Cleats for a Cause. Tickets for the match are still available here.
